About the song[]
Wing is a slow, melodic ballad, written with Graham Coxon, and produced by Mark Ronson during the initial recording sessions for the album, and one of the first songs to be demoed.
Simon said: "The song originated with Coxon and Ronson playing dueling guitars by outdoing each other in the studio, and it had a Southwestern border feel to it already."
Roger said: "So amazing when Mark Ronson played the guitar riff on this. We were struggling to find a direction on this song, but Mark’s part def gave it 'lift off.’ I often refer to Mark’s production work as 'genius,' but had no idea he had this up his sleeve as well… I hear some Bond in this song… old habits die hard!" Inspiration[]
Receiving a comment about the song having a Patti Smith vibe. Simon said: "Patti Smith is always an inspiration, but much more of an inspiration for the song WING was a passage in a book called the The City of Bohane by Kevin Barry. The book is so poetic, and it really affected me. A character in the book goes in to an internalized jealous rage and that's what sparked the style of that song." (Source).

Lyrics[]
She'll never know, what’s eating me alive A hungry demi-god, that will not be denied I am foundering on the absence, of desire meant for me Laid bare imagination for all to see Where does she sleep? And where does sleep find she? Maybe I want my bitter visions to come real On a pilgrimage of lusting That should’ve come my way But my mind it is a jail called jealousy On a wing of innocence fly me out of here Surrendered faith but I'm holding dread And I pray to consequence, if my voice you hear For a better man to be in my head I'll never show, the knife, that's deep inside How with its twist, the more it cuts away at pride Like a rabid dog, at communion That we could not hide away The family's secret bloodstained history On a wing of innocence fly me out of here (I) surrender faith but I'm holding dread And I pray to consequence, if my voice you hear For a better man to be in my head On a wing of innocence, fly me out of here Surrender faith but I'm holding dread And I pray to consequence, if my voice you hear For a better man to be in my head Surrendered faith but I’m holding dread For a better man to be in my head
