"Underneath the Clocktower" is an unreleased song, written by Simon Le Bon in June 1980.
About the song[]
One month after wearing pink leopard skin trousers to his audition for Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon wrote the lyrics to this song during June 1980.
This was a period when the band printed tickets for their first show featuring band members Le Bon and Andy Taylor. It was planned for six weeks hence.
The song was never recorded by Duran Duran, although it was supposedly lined up as a B-side for Union of the Snake, Alex Sadkin stepped in and suggested a less raunchy song.
Ask Katy[]
A question about the song was posted to Ask Katy in May 2003:
Nick Rhodes recalls: "There was another one that I always wanted to do, I don't know if I'd like it now, because I haven't seen it for years, but it was called 'Underneath The Clock Tower'".
Simon: "Yes I still have it. However, I 've got so much new stuff going on, it would seem retro-ist to revisit and rework the piece. s" [1]
Written lyrics[]
The words of "Underneath the Clocktower" were published in 1984 in Simon Le Bon's lyric book, a standard European size A4 bound book with much distressed ice-blue cloth wrapped boards.

Includes lines added by Freon[2]
The girl just stood there, as the Summer rain began to fall Sweetness in the rising air, drawing all her breath Sickness rising on her chest made me heave And I first looked as she cried (on the beach) Why wait? You come with me I want the place where.. The night lives, where the air drives Why wont you come with me? [Sun traces shadows, of wave-hands upon the lea - added by Freon cover] But I gave in to the taste in my mouth, turned my throat to the sky And looking back Eastways, saw her standing there Dark eyes and brooding, like fishes holding the tide And I moved as she smiled (on the beach) Oh will you come with me? At the place where the air drives Where the night lives Oh will you come with me? [Listless we're no place Drops on the harbor quay - added by Freon cover version] [On the beach... On the beach... On the beach...]
