Andy claimed he wasn't allowed a sound check, but Bernard Butler is quoted as stating that his crew turned up the lights because, despite warnings, Taylor had extended his set well beyond its allotted time. In union halls, such as the Forum, Butler said, shows that go into overtime incur stiff financial penalties. "Our set lasts a specific amount of time," says Butler. "It's all organized. But what happened was he had gone on stage 10 minutes late for no apparent reason. He'd just been sitting in his dressing room drinking. Then he went over by somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes. He was doing an extended version of "Bang-a-Gong" when they turned the houselights up. We didn't want to pay the (penalties). I'd hate for this to reflect on the band. Maybe a couple of us were watching, but certainly none of the Psychedelic Furs had their fingers on any light switches." |
