The Dandy Warhols are an American rock band formed in Portland, Oregon in 1993. The band was founded by lead singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor, keyboardist Zia McCabe, guitarist Peter Holmström, and drummer Eric Hedford. Hedford left in 1998 to be replaced by Taylor-Taylor's cousin Brent De Boer. The band's name is a pun on the name of American pop artist Andy Warhol.
The Dandy Warhols are strongly influenced by the Velvet Underground, the Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, the Shadows, and the Rolling Stones. The band was co-produced by Nick Rhodes in 2003.
History[]
Formed in 1993 The Dandy Warhols performed live shows in bars throughout Portland and released their first album, Dandys Rule OK? on Tim Kerr Records in 1995. This album was influential in Capitol Records' decision to sign the band.
The band first achieved success in Europe after the release of their second record …The Dandy Warhols Come Down in 1997; the lead single "Not If You Were The Last Junkie on Earth" proved popular in many countries across the continent. The band, popular both with their visuals and with their sound, gained a reputation throughout Europe and Australia for selling out their live shows.
This was followed by albums including Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia (2000), The Black Album (2004), Come on Feel the Dandy Warhols (2004) and The Dandy Warhols are Sound (2009). The band also released the Nick Rhodes co-produced Welcome To The Monkey House in 2003 which featured Nile Rodgers, Mark Tinley and Sally Boyden. Simon Le Bon also contributed to the album with backing vocals to "Plan A". The name Welcome To The Monkey House was taken from Kurt Vonnegut's collection of short stories of the same name.
