"A View To A Kill" (Shirley Bassey Live)

The Bond Collection - The 30th Anniversary is a cover song album by Welsh singer Shirley Bassey which features a version of Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill", released by Icon Music Group in 1992.

About the album[]

The album was one of many releases in 1992 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the start of the official series of James Bond films, which began with Dr. No (1962). The Bond Collection contains twelve Bond themes performed by Shirley Bassey, featuring new recordings of her three original songs "Goldfinger", "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Moonraker".

The recording sessions for this album were in 1987, and it was due for release during 1987 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Dr No. In the Record Mirror (22 August 1987) it states that Bassey recently recorded an entire album of Bond themes, but amazingly hasn’t yet found a record company to release it. The article shows that Shirley Bassey originally liked the songs and wanted to publish the album. She even plugged it on 'Live At The Palladium' on 3 May 1987 when she performed "A View To A Kill".

But eventually Shirley Bassey decided not to publish the recording, which were sung with a synthesizer-keyboard accompaniment and no orchestra backing. Five years after the recording in 1992, the album was released regardless and Shirley Bassey took legal action. The album was withdrawn and is now a rare item.

Duran Duran performed a Bond guitar medley featuring several songs on this album during the 2009 Summer Tour, and at the Experience Paris show with Mark Ronson in 2008.
