Second Life is an online virtual world developed by Linden Lab, which was launched on June 23, 2003. Duran Duran debuted in the virtual world on June 22, 2011.
About the virtual world[]
Unlike a traditional computer game, Second Life does not have a designated objective, nor traditional game play mechanics or rules.
A number of free client programs called Viewers enable Second Life users, called Residents, to interact with each other through avatars. Residents can explore the world (known as the grid), meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade virtual property and services with one another. Second Life is intended for people aged 12 and over, and as of 2011 has more than 20 million registered user accounts.
On June 16, 2011 Duranduran.com announced the launch of Duran Duran Universe, a new zone in Linden Lab’s Second Life. Originally planned for 2006, the zone includes artistic treasures, interactive features, innovative multimedia, events and games. All chosen by the band members as part of their motto: “designed to make people party!”.
There are four Islands that make up the Duran Duran Universe: Azizi, Sanhedralite, Khanada and Tlon. Each has its own theme.
Azizi
This is an urban style Island, on the lines of a cosmopolitan city. The area includes the Lipstick Tower, featuring many floors to explore and includes a dance club playing a never ending loop of Duran Duran music.
Tlon
This is an entertainment Island, featuring an eyeball that ‘follows’ the users ("Being Followed"). There is also a Mediterranea Spa and the Cinema Eye showing the All You Need Is Now: EPK.
Sanhedralite
The Nature Island, with lots of indigenous sounds, sandy beaches and a winery where users can stomp grapes. There is also a Boat Club, as well as a UFO Club made from an old spaceship.
Khanada
An area featuring an arena, where users can visit each band member’s dressing room (designed by the band members themselves). There is also a secret rehearsal room in the arena, decked out in the style of the "All You Need Is Now" music video.
