Orlando: May 18, 2008 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The Red Carpet Massacre Tour at the UCF Arena in Orlando, FL, USA on 18 May 2008.
About the album[]
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at the UCF Arena, a 10,072 capacity venue located on the main campus of the University of Central Florida. This was the first of two shows performed in the state of Florida on the tour.
The last time Duran Duran were in Orlando, was for the 2005 Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Concert, which was very different from their usual shows.
After British rock band Your Vegas opened this Sunday evening show, Duran Duran were back without all the extra company on stage and began with three songs from the Red Carpet Massacre album.
It was a mere 15 minutes into the show when the familiar introduction to "Hungry Like the Wolf" sent a charge through the audience. There was a healthy turnout, despite some pockets of empty seats in the arena. The venue had been configured in a theater-like setting, cutting the available audience seats in half.
Performing with a striking, deep-blue backdrop of a city skyline illuminated by an arsenal of spotlights, strobes, fog and other effects. Strings of white light bulbs were occasionally lowered into view about the musicians to create a warm, street-party kind of feel. There was also prism effects created by the spotlights pointed out above the crowd.
The new songs showcased a range of sounds, from the up-tempo beat of "Red Carpet Massacre" to the slinkier dance beat of "Nite-Runner". Simon Le Bon told the audience how proud the band were of their new album.
As Duran Duran moved past the halfway point of their 2-hour set, various 1980s songs were performed including "Notorious", "Girls on Film", and "The Wild Boys". The show finished with an encore featuring "Rio".
