Now That's What I Call Music is a compilation album featuring Duran Duran, released in the UK by EMI-Virgin on 28 November 1983.
About the album[]
Released with Duran Duran photography on the front cover by Brian Aris, this is the first of a series of albums that spans 30 years. The compilation contains 30 UK hit singles from 1983.
Phil Collins set the ball rolling with his cover of "You Can't Hurry Love", followed by Duran Duran's first UK no.1 single "Is There Something I Should Know?".
Although the formula later transferred to EMI, it was the brainchild of Virgin executives Stephen Navin and Jon Webster. The first Now deal was signed on Richard Branson's houseboat in London's Little Venice.
The compilation's title came from an unlikely source - a 1920s Danish Bacon poster spotted by Branson at a nearby bric-a-brac shop, run by his future wife Joan Templeman. It depicts a pig saying "Now, that's what I call music," while listening to a chicken.
