"New Moon (Dark Phase)" is the 50th official Duran Duran single, released via online download, 13th September 2024. ℗ 2024 Tape Modern under exclusive licence to BMG Rights Management (US) LLC.
About The Song[]
This is a cover version of Duran Duran's own New Moon on Monday, released as a single on their third album, Seven and the Ragged Tiger, back in 1983. Song styling is more of a contemporary ballad, with slower and more haunting melodies, than the anthemic original. A number of lyrics were changed in this new version.
Although the song was demo'd and recorded in 2023, it was not chosen to be included in the original track listing for Danse Macabre. Instead, fans had to wait for the Deluxe Edition of the album, 12 months later in 2024. New Moon (Dark Phase) was released as a digital download on Friday September 13th 2024.
Song Background[]
The idea for this cover came in 2022, when then band undertook their first ever Halloween themed performance, October 31st 2022, at the Wynn Encore Theatre in Las Vegas Nevada. Several previously recorded Duran songs were revamped for the show, including Night Boat; which became a staple of their Danse Macabre tour. However, New Moon on Monday wasn't one of them.
In March 2023, the band collaborated with Andy Taylor as Joshua Blair flew to Ibiza, and recorded several new guitar parts for songs, including Shadows On Your Side and New Moon on Monday. But the song was not included on the subsequent album [[Danse Macabre].
In March 2024, a new collection of songs was arranged for Deluxe Editions of Danse Macabre; which included several new original songs, a cover version, and also New Moon, now retitled "New Moon (Dark Phase)".
The live debut of the new song happened on May 3rd 2024, once again at the Wynn Encore Theatre in Las Vegas.
