"Missing" is a song by Arcadia, released as the B-side to their second single "Goodbye Is Forever" from the album So Red the Rose by Capitol-Parlophone in January 1986.
About the song[]
The song was written by Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes, who co-produced the track with Alex Sadkin. "Missing" was recorded between April and June 1985 at the Studio de la Grande Armee in Paris, France. The song is the story of a sad loss, and a ghost who haunts loved ones' memories.
In 2007, Le Bon revealed that the song had been influenced by the poem “On a Dead Child” by Richard Middleton.
Song Development[]
Nick: "I was in the control room with Simon and all the other musicians are [there]. We're working with Mark Eagan, Lorri Anderson's percussionist; who was quite extraordinary. David Van Tegum, Musami, um Japanese guitarist they'd all come from such diverse musical backgrounds and we said 'right, just go in there, and we're just going to count this in, and let's see what happens'. I was mystified. I'd never heard anything like that sound before. And that moment to me is really one of the most important in our entire career, because I realized the people coming from different places and mixing that together, that's when you get something really different and extraordinary." Music video[]
The video was directed by Dean Chamberlain, who received an MTV Breakthrough Award for his production. He later directed Duran Duran's "All She Wants Is" video in 1988.

Lyrics[]
And as I wander down to where you lay The blood rushed up to meet the roses In your hair I thought I saw you smile But now I don't see you anywhere Whispering your love song in my ear How can you touch me when you're not really there? Stumbling out I made my way towards the open door Climbing fast the sun broad streaming Laughter down into your empty gaze Where can I find out How I want to join in your games I hear you calling I hear you ... calling calling calling calling Whispering your love song in my ear How can you touch me? How do you really dare?
