Live at the N.E.C. Arena: 18 April 2004 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The Reunion Tour at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, UK on 18 April 2004.
About the album[]
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at the NEC Arena, a 16,000 capacity venue located adjacent to Birmingham International Airport. This was the first show performed by the original five band members in Birmingham since 12 December 1983.
After English duo Goldfrapp warmed up the crowd with their style of electronic music, the lights dimmed and the screaming began. One by one Duran Duran coolly sauntered onto the stage.
Soon Simon Le Bon was grabbing the microphone and the band launched into "(Reach Up for The) Sunrise", an unknown song at the time.
What followed was two hours and 10 minutes featuring new songs and classics, such as "Hungry Like the Wolf", "A View to a Kill", "The Wild Boys", "Girls on Film" and "The Reflex".
"Planet Earth" was introduced as the song which rocketed them from the Rum Runner club in Birmingham, onto a worldwide stage. Simon Le Bon went on to add "Tonight is a special night for us. We've a lot of family here so we'd better be good."
A Psycho-movie inspired shower scene featuring Liz Hurley, shot by Nick Rhodes provided a backdrop to a passionate performance of "A View to a Kill".
Le Bon kept the crowd amused with the revelation that 'there are more porn films made in the Midlands than anywhere else', before the band played "Come Undone".
Later Le Bon put a modern twist on the 'lighters in the air' tradition by asking the audience to hold their backlit mobile phones aloft, for a performance of "Save A Prayer".
After a punchy, almost punk-like performance of "The Wild Boys", the band slipped away – only to return for an encore of "Girls on Film" and "Rio".
Tickets for the event cost around £40.00.
