Live In South Africa 1993 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during An Acoustic Evening Tour at the National Monumental Arena in Pretoria, South Africa on 24 April 1993. (venue is The Momentum Arena)

About the album[]

The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at the National Monumental Arena, a former venue located in one of South Africa's three capital cities. This was the last of nine shows performed in South Africa by Duran Duran during 1993.

The show was filmed for a TV broadcast in South Africa, which recorded Duran Duran's first tour in the country and also one of the first by a Western band in South Africa after the fall of apartheid.

After playing in nine countries, the Acoustic Tour reached Pretoria. The evening began with The Streaks, a pop/ska band from Cape Town managed by Gavin Elder.

Backed by a string section, Duran Duran kicked off with their debut single "Planet Earth", played as a powerful acoustic version. "Hungry Like the Wolf" was next, then the band performed "Ordinary World" from the recently released Duran Duran album.

Before playing "Girls on Film", Simon Le Bon said "Give us a clue Nick, can't think what it could be!". Spoken as the camera clicking intro to "Girls on Film" began.

Near the end of the evening, Duran Duran performed "The Wild Boys" for the first time on the Acoustic Tour. (Wild Boys was performed earlier in Johannesburg at the Nasrec Showgounds too, same version, almost on-demand - we were tired of waiting :0 and called for it). The band ended the show with a rousing version of "Rio".
