Gered Mankowitz (born 3 August 1946) is a British photographer of the rock music scene over the last 40 years, whose work has included photographing Duran Duran.
Biography[]
Gered was born in London (UK) and was the first of four sons of the late author, playwright and film writer Wolf Mankowitz and his wife, the Jungian psychotherapist Ann Mankowitz. He left school at the age of 15 years old and having displayed a natural 'eye' for photography whilst on a school trip to Holland was inspired to take up photography by the actor Peter Sellers. Gered photographs were seen by photographer Tom Blau, who offered him an apprenticeship at his photo agency, Camera Press Ltd., in London. Over a period of several months Gered worked in all the various departments that made up Camera Press, finally moving to the studio and going on various assignments in and around London.
During the Rolling Stones' formative years from 1965-1967, he was their photographer and friend, not only responsible for some of the band’s most memorable, and candid, photographs, but for shooting the covers of their Between the Buttons and December Children albums. He also has photographed such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithful, Billy Idol, Gary Glitter, Dave Edmunds, Annie Lennox, Slade, Duran Duran, Traffic, Free, The Small Faces, Soft Machine, Slade, Suzi Quatro, Sweet, Elton John, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, ABC, The Yardbirds, and Jimi Hendrix. His portraits of Jimi Hendrix were later used for the cover of his 1993 compilation album The Ultimate Experience.
Today Gered Makowitz is based at his North London studio, taking pictures for the advertising and music industry. He contributes regularly to Mojo magazine, and continues to photograph bands for album covers such as Oasis, The Verve, Catatonia, Kula Shaker and more. Mankowitz continues to gain world-wide fame for his contributions to pop-culture. His work is sold worldwide.
