Gavin Elder is a South African film and video director, whose work has included making Duran Duran documentaries and the All You Need Is Now: EPK.
Biography[]
Born in England, Gavin started working in front of the camera in South Africa, and was a presenter on the national television show called File Under F.
He later wanted to retain his anonymity and began directing from behind the lens, which included music videos and several made for the South African band Springbok Nude Girls. Gavin has also managed a band called The Streaks, a pop/ska band from Cape Town that were a support act on Duran Duran's Dilate Your Mind Tour in South Africa during 1993.
Gavin has been documenting Duran Duran tours and recording sessions since their first reunion show in Osaka, Japan, back in 2003. His association with Duran Duran began when he was living in Japan (2002-03) and knew Simon Le Bon's friend Nick Wood from SYN Productions, who introduced him to the band which led to Gavin travelling Japan with them. On the last day of the Japanese tour he showed footage he'd filmed to the band's manager Wendy Laister, who then asked Gavin to join Duran Duran on the rest of The Reunion Tour. Gavin's work has included directing the behind-the-scenes documentary Live At Wembley 2004 during the Live from London shows, that was included with the CD/DVD version of Astronaut. He has also shot footage for the Ask Katy book Would Someone Please Explain?, and directed Duran Duran's unreleased Drama Americana documentary.
