About The Movie[]
This is an extended mix of clips freely available on the internet, which shows the bands career; mostly looking at the fans and the craziness surrounding them. Portrayed as a light-hearted comedy movie, revealing some of the mayhem involved with being megastars; the things which went wrong, and some funny stories.
The author says: "As soon as I'd released Laughing with... Duran Duran - The Movie, I kept finding more and more clips (on youtube) that I couldn't throw away. The lifestyle of touring, no days off, pressure, fans, and constant screaming. I used to have a copy of a (bootleg?) film called The Duran Duran Phenomenon, and I got the idea to make a film about that - the Mania."
Production began with the gathering of clips from June 2020 until July 2021 (13months). Editing began 25th Feb 2021, and ended 4th September 2021 (7 months). Subtitles took a month (6 Aug - 15 Sept). Pre-release versions were show privately to some fans on the Proboards DD Forum during the months before release.
The author says: "This was another project which turned into a monster. Each day youtube would keep finding me new clips to look at, each with their own funny twists and stories. As I went through them and arranged the clips, I noticed certain themes kept coming up. Fans! for sure. But also constant travelling, airports, press conferences, news, TV spots, shows, and after all of that, recording sessions. I noticed too many documentaries focused on the glamour boys side of things, or the 'wild boys' image. I wanted to offer some kind of antidote to all of those dry featurettes. This one turned into a opus of fan fanatica, the madness and the mayhem, but also looking at the funny side."
"Near the end of the project I finally came up with the name "40 Years of Hysteria", and when I uploaded it to youtube, one of the thumbnails was the blue image of a woman holding a lighter. This was a completely random event which seemed to sum up the project, even though the image itself was taken from a frame of very low resolution footage. I added titles to this image, and it became almost like my icon - a blue weeping Rio woman. One of the final things I did was to add her as the background image of the end credits; which fades into an artwork version of her with eyes closed and now smiling."
