Cardiff 1998 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The Greatest and Latest Tour at the Cardiff International Arena in Cardiff, UK on 8 December 1998.
About the album[]
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at the Cardiff International Arena, a 7,500 capacity venue located in the capital city of Wales. This was the second of eleven UK dates on the tour.
It was just over 18 years since Duran Duran first played in Cardiff, appearing as the opening act for Hazel O'Connor's Megahype Tour. That show was held at the Top Rank on 18 November 1980.
After Britpop band Rialto opened the show, Duran Duran came out rocking with their debut single "Planet Earth". With Nick Rhodes positioned at the front of the stage, the keyboard player punctuated the song with his near-trademark synth sound.
The band then burst into their first UK no.1 single "Is There Something I Should Know?", a song first showcased live at the Prince's Trust Rock Gala in July 1983.
On tour in December to promote their Greatest album, Duran Duran now composed of Simon Le Bon, Warren Cuccurullo and Nick Rhodes continued the show with a selection of their oldest, latest and greatest songs.
Near the end of the evening, band members sang "Happy Birthday" to guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, who was 42 years old that day.
Tickets for the event cost around £17.50.
The tour poster features photography by Ellen von Unwerth.
