"Butt Naked" is an unreleased song by Duran Duran, written for the Medazzaland album.
About the song[]
The song was written by Duran Duran during the demo recording sessions for the Medazzaland album.
"Butt Naked" is an early version of the Medazzaland album song "Be My Icon", but contains completely different lyrics. The demo recording was sung by John Taylor, recorded July 7-14 1995, and was part of the album until John officially left the band in January 1997.
Background[]
In 1995, John Taylor was going through a very public separation from his then wife, Amanda de Cadenet. In February, the pair decided to try a separation to see if they could mend the relationship. In response, in February and March, John began writing songs in LA which would eventually end up being released as his first solo album: Feelings Are Good And Other Lies. Development continued through to May, when John penned Trust The Process.
In May 1995, Duran Duran embarked on the Radio Station Festival Tour, which continued through to the end of June. Songs like PL You were being played live around this time, perhaps also written by John? Immediately following the tour, John continued to work with the Neurotic Outsiders; where some of his songs from Feelings R Good would go on to be released on their debut album.
Towards the end of July 1995, Warren booked a studio in London to work on the next Duran Duran album, where all of the band where expected to appear. Simon complained of writers block and left for Jamaica. Nick went to Paris, leaving Warren and John to work on songs. They recorded music and demos together from August 7th to the 14th, and these demos were leaked as the Medazzaland Demos.
The lyrics seem to be in direct reference to Amanda de Cadenet.
Lyrics[]
I’m sitting here butt naked, with nothing between me and my shoes I’ve tried to talk you out of it, but you seem so intent on abuse You emptied out the bank account, you took it all, you know there’s nothing more You’ll never learn, you think it’s me, but you’re beyond all help - it’s quite pathetic How many years will it take for the debt to recover? You’ve taken it all Do you still want more? I’d give you the shirt off my back if I thought that I’d be rid of you TV in the corner, but I can’t afford the warnings, our child’s watching The air is cold and so’s the water, where’s your love now?, you demon daughter You never seem to work and just complaining, up all night and partying And one day soon you’ll die in someone’s vomit, I hope you rot in it How many years will it take for the debt to recover? How many years will I wait for the love of another? You’ve taken it all Do you still want more I’d give you the shirt off my back if I thought that I’d be rid of you? You’ve taken it all Dishing the dirt behind my back - don’t you know that you’re hurting us all?
