Birmingham NIA: 7 July 2008 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The Red Carpet Massacre Tour at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, UK on 7 July 2008.
About the album[]
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at the National Indoor Arena, a 12,700 seat city center venue that opened in 1991. Located very near the site of the former Rum Runner nightclub, this was Duran Duran's first ever show at the National Indoor Arena.
The two hour show was dedicated to the memory of Roger Bates, the father of keyboard player Nick Rhodes. Roger died suddenly the previous month at the age of 69.
Huge paparazzi style flash bulbs adorned the stage as the band opened with tracks from their latest album Red Carpet Massacre, with Simon Le Bon even standing on his own piece of red carpet.
The show continued with songs from the 1980s including "Save A Prayer", "Girls on Film" and "Hungry Like the Wolf", played especially for Rhodes' father.
During the show John Taylor spoke to the audience and said “You may have been at the NIA before and not heard songs written on this very street, but tonight you will hear many." “The Rum Runner is now a fitness suite at the Hyatt Hotel, but that place was very good to us. We should have been on the barricades when it came down.”
Simon Le Bon added “We are Duran Duran, a local outfit, here to make you party. It felt like the band were back in the Rum Runner after all."
Midway through the show Duran Duran swapped jeans, shirts and ties for smart black shiny suits and synthesizers for a Kraftwerk style electro section, before returning to their normal instruments to close the show with "The Wild Boys" and "Rio".
The Duke Spirit were the opening act.
Tickets for the event cost around £40.00.
