About the song[]

Beautiful Lies is an uplifting New Wave Dance Ballad, with a disco beat, and with dark lyrics about lies and the games people play.

Beautiful Lies is the first song on the album Future Past to be produced with Giorgio Moroder; the famous Italian keyboardist and producer. The band said they were on their best behaviour while in the studio with him, compared to the shouting and screaming during the Alkan sessions. All of the band were impressed by Moroders ability to lead the production, and get what he wanted. Nick said: "He was the consummate professional, too. He’d turn up every day on time with his briefcase, get out his little keyboard and put it on the desk along with his computer and get to work." John compared working with Moroder to "working with a girlfriend you had a crush on at school". Roger said: I've always thought that elements of this sound like something from a Broadway Musical, very different from anything we've recorded before. Great thing about Giorgio Moroder is that he really understands musical movement and structure as well as groove. He has so much experience in the world of movies soundtracks and I felt that when we worked with him.". (Source).

There are two separate bass lines interwoven throughout the song. One uses a regular electric bass guitar with the use of heavy effects. The other bass line is more clearly JT playing the bass guitar. John said: "I laid down the electric bass part initially, with Giorgio in the room. Later on we were working in more detail on the overall arrangement and I asked Nick to dial up a tight bass sound on the Jupiter. I played that over the top of the electric bass as I felt there needed to be something more in that area." (Source).

Backing vocals were provided by Barli, and also by Simon's daughter Saffron Le Bon. Simon said "I always wanted to work with Saffie because she has a beautiful voice. The first song she worked on was “Beautiful Lies.” I wanted someone who had a voice like a chime, and she does. She sang, and everyone went “wow!” Not surprisingly, she plugs in to my intonation and diction like no other backing vocalist I’ve ever worked with. She is able to match my vocal very closely - she sounds like a female version of me (or I sound like a male version of her)." (Source).

Song Meaning[]

After a fan wrote to Ask Katy about a melancholy feeling when listening to the song, Simon replied: "Yes, there is something melancholy about the song "FUTURE PAST." It’s about maudlin people but I am saying, "don’t be sad, just enjoy this moment because in ten years time, you will be looking back and saying, 'wasn’t that great?'". You should channel that energy in to living in the moment."

Lyrics[]

You walked into this plastic paradise
Deceiver or truth-dealer, you decide?
And now you're in my head, what does that say?
About the kind of games we came to play

What does it mean? How do I survive?
      In your beautiful dream (in your beautiful dream);
In your beautiful life (in your beautiful life)
I wanna come clean, when I look in your eyes
I wanna believe, in your beautiful lies

But I can only be here for so long
The more I stay - the more I don't belong
As the drums announce we are trapped, inside a snare
I realise you're the bait, which got me there

What does it mean? How do I survive?
In your beautiful dream; in your beautiful life
I wanna come clean when I look in your eyes
I wanna believe in your beautiful lies

(Beautiful lies
In the lies)

Always in your scheming, the pleasure and the price
But all that I am feeling, is more than paradise
(Beautiful lies)
Always in my dreaming, you taste like cherry ice
All while I am being, a scream in paradise
Always in your scheming, the pleasure and the price
But all that I am feeling is more than paradise
