"Amy a Go Go" is an early song performed live in 1980 by Duran Duran, which eventually was transformed into the song Rio.
About the song[]
The origin of this song is said to be a re-working of the earlier Andy Wickett song See Me Repeat Me, although there are very few similarities between these songs, and it is difficult to say that they are connected. Wickett also claimed that the song was related to the earlier track Stevie's Radio Station, a song he brought to the band from TV Eye. When asked about this, Nick replied that there was "not even a slight hint of truth to this, I remember [Stevie's Radio Station] being a very basic rock track."
The song was played live on July 16th 1980, at the Rum Runner club in Birmingham, and probably written in early 1980 or late 1979. At this point it had the title "Amy A-Go-Go."
The track starts off with a couple of lines set in Birmingham, England, rather than the Brazilian beach. Simon Le Bon explained on social media: "I was in a restaurant in the middle of [Birmingham] and I saw this waitress literally swanning across the floor, and that was how the lyric was born." "I'd seen this girl working as a waitress in a cocktail bar. And I just started writing on the back of a napkin about how she was, and that's what turned into the verse."
When Simon Le Bon and John Taylor were on the UK show Songbook, Le Bon explained: "When we went in to make the second album, when we were starting thinking about it, you (Taylor) came up with the title 'Rio' and said, 'I think this sort of says it all in kind of a Roxy Music cool sort of way.' And we were like, 'Yeah!' It absolutely, does. And we'd been to America and it had a lot of references to America in it.

Moving on the floor now babe you're a bird of paradise Cherry ice cream smile I suppose it's very nice With a step to you're left and a flick to you're right You catch that mirror way out West You know you're something special and you look like you're the best Amy a go-go...
